You can use both group conversations in Chat and specific spaces to communicate with one or more people. Find out where each is recommended.
While it’s possible to send messages to groups of people, if you often need to communicate with a specific group of people, it’s worth setting up a space.
You can add members to a space manually, or by simply including their name in a message.
You can view the member list for a space at any time, and send a direct message to a space member, or remove them from the space if required.
Depending on how you were added to a Google Chat space, you will either be added to the space automatically, or be invited to join.
Creating conversation threads in a space
Spaces can be divided into message threads - try to keep related information in separate threads where possible, rather than adding all information as responses to the first thread in the space.
Searching for messages in spaces
As well as searching for direct messages, you can search in a particular space for keywords, direct mentions, images, videos and Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
You can use the Files tab in a space to view all files that have been shared in the space from a single screen.
You can add tasks to a space and assign them to specific space members. Tasks can be given a due date and can be marked as complete when they have been carried out.
