Rather than keeping MS Office files in their native format, you can convert them to Google Docs as you upload them to Google Drive, to make the most of all of the collaboration features of Google Workspace.
Before uploading files into Google Drive, you can set whether documents will be converted to Google Docs as they are imported.
Click on the Settings cog to the right of the Google Drive screen
Choose Settings
To convert all docs to Google format as they are imported, check Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format
Click on Done
You can now upload the document as follows:
From the Google Drive home page, click on the New button
Choose File Upload
Locate the document you want to upload
You can import more than one file at a time by clicking on the first file, then holding Ctrl while clicking on each additional file
Click on Open after selecting the file(s) you wish to upload
The documents will be added to the Upload list and you will see the progress of the upload. You can click on Cancel at any time to cancel the upload:
After the file has been converted, the original document is saved as a previous version of the document. This original file can be viewed at any time as follows:
Click on the File menu
Choose Version History
Choose See revision History
On the Revision History pane, click on the link to View original
Return to the current version of the document using the Back button, then click on Back again to return to the document.
